Article : Accessing Your Gnosis Hosting Portal

Summary: Your Gnosis system comes with a hosting portal to provide you with access to control your hosting environment if desired.  While normally most of these operations would be handles by Gnosis Support, you may want to access your portal to perform certain operations such as making your own database backup.

Your Gnosis hosting portal provides you with access to the hosting environment of your Gnosis subscription.  You will have received an email with login credentials for your hosting portal when your subscription was initially setup.  If you need these credentials supplied again, please contact Gnosis Support.

Functions provided via your hosting portal include:
  • Setting up and configuration of FTP logins for file transfers.
  • Management of your email accounts, alias names, forwarding, etc.
  • File manager for directly uploading and/or downloading files to/from your website.
  • Scheduler for setting up your own regular backups or other file operations (in addition to those already performed daily by Gnosis Support).
  • Access to your database for performing immediate backups to store or download.
  • Setup and management of website configurations for special needs.

Accessing Your Hosting Portal

You will need your hosting account username and password to access your portal.  This is not the same as your login to Gnosis.  If you do not have your hosting portal username or password, you may request it by emailing

If you have any questions regarding use of your hosting portal, please contact support.  Please do not change any settings in your portal account unless you fully understand the ramifications of making the change.  Gnosis support is available to assist you in this regard.

Backing Up Your Database

  1. login to your hosting portal and select "Databases/SQL Server" on the menu.
  2. From the list of your databases, click on the name of the database you wish to backup.
  3. Click on "Maintenance Tools", then the "Backup" button.
  4. On the resulting page, choose either:
    1. "Download" to perform and download your database backup immediately via your browser.
    2. "Copy to Folder" to copy your database backup file to a folder in your hosting space (we recommend saving the file in your "data" folder for the best security).
  5. Press the "Backup" button to perform the backup immediately.  If you have chosen to download the backup immediately, a "file save" dialog will be displayed asking you where on your computer you wish to save the backup file.

Using the File Manager to Download Files

The Gnosis Hosting Portal has a "File Manager" option listed in the left hand menu once you choose either a "Space" or "Web Site" option on that left hand menu.

Once in the File Manager, you have access to upload and download files, create directories, zip, unzip, move and copy any fiels or directory on your hosting space.  To download a file, simple click on the file name and then choose a location on your local computer to which the downloaded file can be saved.

Accessing Downloaded Backup Data

A downloaded database backup resides in a zip file that contains an SQL Server backup of your database.  You may unzip and then restore this backup using any Microsoft SQL Server edition (including the personal express edition for PC's) to gain access to your entire database locally.  We recommend that you consult your IT support help desk or contact Gnosis Support to get this initially setup.  There will be a per incident support fee for setting this up with Gnosis Support.

After you have restored your database file using a local SQL Server, you may also add a configuration to your Gnosis Pro login screen to access the data in your downloaded database using the following procedure:
  1. Request a local database configuration script from Gnosis Support and run that script on your SQL Server Management Studio to create permissions in your database for it to be accessed locally.
  2. On the login screen, press the "New" button to create a new profile
  3. Change the database location from Remote DB to Local DB and enter the name of the computer on which the database resides.  If it is on your local PC, this will most probably be "(local)".
  4. Login using your regular username and password.

Once your local SQL Server instance has been configured using the script from Gnosis Support, subsequent backup files will work immediately after being restored.
