Article : Adding an External HTML Editor to Gnosis

Summary: Gnosis Pro includes a basic in-built HTML editor that ships wth the product. To gain more advanced editing capabilities, Gnosis Pro optionally integrates with an external HTML editor of your choice.

This Article describes implementing and using an external HTML editor - including the KompoZer HTML Editor package that is available for free.
Applies to: Gnosis Pro Version 1.2.313 and greater.

Adding an External HTML Editor to Gnosis Pro

As an alternative to using its standard inbuilt HTML editor, Gnosis Pro will interface with most standard HTML Editors to allow you to use your favorite editor to compose HTML messages in the Gnosis Communications Center.

If you are a beginner to editing HTML and need more functionality than is provided by the internal editor, Gnosis provides the optional KompoZer HTML Editor package to provide you with a very functional beginner's editor.

Installing the KompoZer HTML Editor Package

KompoZer is an easy-to-use free WYSIWYG web page editor with some of the capabilities found in higher end Microsoft FrontPage, Adobe DreamWeaver, Microsoft Expression Web and other similar programs. Note: If you are a professional web editor or already comfortable with one of the high end packages, we recommend that you continue to use your existing package and configure Gnosis to use it as described in the next section.

KompoZer is designed to be extremely easy to use, making it ideal for non-technical computer users who want to create an attractive professional-looking page without needing to know HTML or web coding. The KompoZer HTML Editor is a free product as described on the KompoZer web site.

Perform the following to install the KompoZer package:

  1. Download the KompoZer install package to a location on your computer that you can find easily.
  2. Run the installer by double-clicking on the downloaded file.
  3. Accept all of the defaults in the install wizard and continue untill the installer is completed.
  4. Important: Once installed, there are two settings that must be made to have KompoZer work properly with Gnosis. Run KompoZer now from the KompoZer icon or the start menu and perform the following steps:
    1. From the main menu, choose "Tools" and then "Options".
    2. On the left of the "Options Window" that appears, choose the "Advanced" tab.
    3. Down the bottom of the Advanced tab, in the "Special Characters" section, set the options as follows:
      1. For "Output the following characters as entities:", choose the option: "Use &#..; notation for all non-ASCII characters".
      2. Check on the box for "Don't encode special characters in attribute values".
    4. Press the "OK button to close the window.
    5. Close KompoZer.

Configuring an External HTML Editor in Gnosis

To configure Gnosis to use an external HTML editor, you must provide to Gnosis the full path to the executable program that you wish to use.  You can get generally the full path to the executable by right-clicking on the shortcut used to start the program, click on "Properties", and then copy the text in the "Target" text box.

To configure the external editor in Gnosis, perform the following steps:
  1. From the Gnosis main menu, select Settings | Preferences & Settings.
  2. On the displayed grid, choose the "General" tab on the left.
  3. From the list of preferences and settings, find the preference called "External HTML Editor"
  4. In the rightmost data column in the grid (with the logged in user's name at the top of the column), click on the (...) button to open a text window
  5. Enter or paste the full path and file name for the external editor.  Make sure to remove any quotation marks surrounding the path/file name if you copied it from a shortcut.
  6. Save & Close the preferences and settings.
When you next go to the button to launch a HTML editor, it will by default use the external editor to edit HTML and give you the option to use the internal Gnosis editor by selecting it using the split area of the button.
